A Mother’s AIDS Story
A daughter documents her mother’s triumphant victory over the darkness of AIDS and HIV.
In 1986, Los Angeles single mom, Sharon Lund, was shocked to find out she was infected with HIV, which she contracted 3 years prior. Lund was given 6 months to live and is still alive 40 years later. She not only miraculously survived, but thrived, and became a worldwide AIDS educator, advocate and spiritual warrior.
SYNOPSIS
Sharon was one of the first heterosexual women to contract HIV in 1983. During the height of the AIDS epidemic, when people were dying gruesome deaths, Sharon defied medical odds and survived the darkest years of the AIDS crisis. She chose courage over silence and went public with her story in 1987. Sharon went on to become a global advocate and speaker, making it her mission to educate and break the silence surrounding AIDS and speak out for women living with HIV/AIDS. She encountered life threatening challenges from childhood on, marked by two near-death experiences.
As a single mom, Sharon forged a unique path to healing where there was no path available. This documentary features present-day and archival interviews with Sharon and key people who were active in the movement. Sharon lives on Maui and is still involved in the AIDS community on a local and state-wide level.
The film is directed by Sharon’s daughter, Jeaneen Lund. From the age of 11, she supported her mom through sickness, near-death and recovery while navigating her own way through the neon landscapes and subcultures of 80s/90s Los Angeles. Jeaneen was a teen HIV/AIDS educator in the 90s and is a photographer and director.
Unfortunately, there are far too many heartbreaking stories about HIV and AIDS. Perhaps there are none like this.
A powerful story that is just as relevant today, inspiring anyone who has faced adversity of any kind and reminding us that in the darkest depths there is always light, resilience and hope.
